The 2016 Scharzhofberger P Riesling opens with a deep, pure and smoky bouquet with crunchy slate notes and very fine Riesling aromas that still play the second fiddle here. This nose indicates a great terroir wine from the most famous vineyard along the Saar. Lush and elegant but aristocratic, terribly complex and long on the palate, this is a fascinating dry Scharzhofberger from the Pergentsknopp plot. The 2016 is as fine and filigreed as it is intense and complex. The finish, however, is mind blowing, Van Volxem's 2016 Pergentsknopp is the finest dry Scharzhofberger I have ever tasted and one of the finest dry German Rieslings I have tasted from this more than excellent and digestible vintage. What great tension here. This is powerhouse of a Riesling. The combination of purity, tension and complexity is fabulous here. Tasted March 2018.
