Product Description: This is a strand of Millefiori beads.
Note: As this is an antique item, it may have scratches, cracks, or chips.
The Millefiori technique dates back to the late 1800s to early 1900s and originates from Venice. This intricate method involves either mosaic application or mosaic folding to create the beads. In Africa, these beads are known as "Chacha So." The term "Millefiori" translates to "a thousand flowers" in Italian. During a period when Venice's exclusive trade with the East was declining and Bohemian glass was dominating the European market, Venetian artisans developed Millefiori glass as a countermeasure. These colorful, decorative glass beads became a staple in African trade, where merchants crafted tubular beads from the Millefiori glass and traded them as valuable commodities.
