Larger and rounder than most other avocado varieties. It has a very dark, almost black skin that only gets darker as it ripens. The flesh is a pale green colour with a creamier consistency than the more common Hass and it has a slightly nutty and creamy taste. It has a medium-sized seed. Lamb Hass is a smaller tree that bears more fruit and it matures later in the season than regular Hass avocados. The symmetrical fruit has pebbly skin with green flecks.
The tree is grafted and approximately 80 cm tall. It will produce fruit in 1 to 2 years. It is an evergreen tree that does not lose leaves in winter. It grows well in subtropical areas and can handle the occasional frost. If it’s grown in Queensland this tree is self pollinating. Can be grown in pots.
Avocados do well in a partly shady position and it is advisable to create a mound of soil to plant them on top of, as the tree likes lots of watering but also likes to have good drainage. Be sure to water every day and apply mulch. Max height for this tree is 2 to 5 m. Harvesting months are October to January.
