The 16800 occupies a precise and much-appreciated position in the Submariner lineage — the transitional reference, produced from 1978 to 1984, that bridged the classic matte-dial era and the glossy dials that would follow. It was the first Submariner to feature a sapphire crystal, yet it retained the matte black dial and the overall character of the references that preceded it. For collectors, it represents the best of both worlds.
This 1982 example wears its age with complete honesty. The matte black dial has developed that characteristic warm, slightly faded quality that only tritium lume achieves over decades — the circular plots and baton indices having turned a rich vanilla against the darkened surface, the whole creating a patina that the factory could never reproduce. The gilt bezel pip, retained on earlier 16800 production, completes the vintage character of the dial perfectly.
The case and Oyster bracelet show the honest wear of a watch that has been used as intended — unpolished, the surfaces carrying their original finishing with integrity. The matte dial and the sapphire crystal sit together in that brief window of Rolex production that collectors increasingly seek out.
A transitional Submariner in its most characterful configuration, wearing four decades with complete authenticity.
