The Four Eye Butterflyfish (Chaetodon capistratus) is a classic and instantly recognizable saltwater fish, named for the bold black “false eye” spot near the tail that helps confuse predators in the wild. Its bright yellow body, accented with vertical striping and a contrasting black facial mask, makes it a standout addition to larger marine aquariums.
Native to the Caribbean and Western Atlantic, the Four Eye Butterflyfish is an active swimmer that does best in spacious tanks with plenty of open water and live rock for grazing and shelter. It has a peaceful temperament and generally does well with other non-aggressive fish, making it a great candidate for community fish-only systems.
While hardy once established, this species is not considered reef safe, as it may nip at corals, anemones, and some sessile invertebrates. It thrives best in fish-only or FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) setups. In captivity, the Four Eye Butterflyfish adapts well to a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared foods designed for butterflyfish.
