Over 11 incredible days explore some of the magnificent wilderness areas of Tasmania for a specialized fungi, moss and lichen macro-photography and nature journalling experience accompanied by expert guides. This is a unique opportunity to see some of the over 2,000 fungi species, mosses and lichens of Tasmania's wilderness areas. 

This specialized nature tour includes all of the major bioregions of Tasmania, and enables you to see a full a range of cold temperate fungi. See some of Tasmania's most important forest ecosystems with wilderness walks through the Mount Field National Park, the pristine Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers, Lake St Claire and the exceptional Cradle Mountain National Park. Enjoy the opportunity to observe and learn about hundreds of unique fungi species with the use of macro-photography and nature journaling techniques. 

Enjoy a full day Gordon River World Heritage cruise with visits to Hells Gates, Sarah Island and the Gordon River boardwalk. This nature tour includes time for photo processing, nature journaling, as well as a visit to a Tasmanian Devil wildlife conservation centre for photo opportunities of Tasmanian Devils, Spotted tail and Eastern quolls. 

Your tour guides include passionate macro-photographer Cristy Froehlich; NatureArt Lab Director, and nature journaler Julia Landford and zoologist/entomologist Alan Landford. 

  • Julia Landford is the team leader and Founding Director of NatureArt Lab and brings substantial experience with natural history, nature journalling and tour management in many international locations including Costa Rica. 
  • Alan Landford has a scientific background in zoology, specialising in entomology from the Australian National University. He also has substantial wildlife experience from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Costa Rica, The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador and Borneo. 
  • Cristy Froehlich is an award-winning Canberra-based nature photographer with over 10 years of experience within the professional photography field. With a wealth of technical knowledge as well as in-field skills, Cristy specialises in nature photography, and her genuine love and knowledge of nature coupled with her photographic passion makes her an inspiring facilitator. Cristy enjoys using photography to shed light on the macro world not often seen, and creating beautifully edited, artistic images to create awareness of nature and its conservation.

Cost: Total cost with all inclusions listed above is $6,400 per person (based on couples or twin share accommodation - minimum of two people per booking). 

Limited single rooms (not sharing) are available on request.

Payments: Full price $6,400 - Minimum of two bookings for a shared room, with a 25% non-refundable deposit of $1,450.00. Final payments are due by 30 March 2026. 

Nature Tour Cancellation policy: 

Comprehensive travel insurance is required for any financial loss caused by injury, illness, emergency medical evacuation, loss and damage to personal belongings, not being able to travel on a confirmed date of departure or tour cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances.  

Any cancellations after the deposit is paid will incur loss of the full deposit, which helps to cover our costs for design and management of the tour program and early supplier costs incurred. 

For cancellations 120 to 60 days before departure 50% of the cost of the tour will be forfeited. If cancellation takes place 59 days or less before the start date 100% of the tour cost will be forfeited. 

If NatureArt Lab has to cancel a nature tour due to undersubscription, you will receive a refund of all payments made for the tour.

Fitness levels for participants:  Moderate level of fitness required. Walking trails will range from full day walks through to short trails (ranging from Grade 1 flat walks to Grade 3 with some stairs and steep sections). All walks will be done very slowly with photography and nature journaling as our main objective. 

Weather conditions: We can expect all weather conditions at this time of year including sun, rain, sleet and light snow. Fungi like cold temperate forests which are often cold, wet and muddy.
