Following the passing of Mary-Jo Lough's mother in the summer of 2019, she experienced a recurring presence of butterflies in her life. During a walk, one butterfly even landed on her shoulder and remained there for over 10 minutes. To Mary-Jo, these butterflies came to symbolize resurrection, endurance, and hope. Interestingly, she had never felt a particular affinity for butterflies before that summer. Now, whenever she encounters them, the delicate creatures evoke thoughts of her mother, and she marvels at their beauty.
In the summer of 2019, Mary-Jo created the original pieces of all the flower prints. Facing a challenging period as her mother was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer in mid-April and eventually passed away in July, she turned to art as a therapeutic outlet. While spending the summer in Ontario with her family and ill Mother, during her spare time Mary-Jo found herself in her mother's garden and created art as a means to cultivate a small piece of hope and joy for herself each day.
