Basie All Stars
Description:
Fabrik Unreleased Live Series: The Count Basie All-Stars recorded in May 1981 with Marshall Royal (as), Harry Edison (tp), Buddy Tate (ts), Billy Mitchell (ts) and others at "Onkel Poe's Carnegie Hall" in Hamburg, Germany. The "Live At Fabrik" series focuses on Fabrik, a live music club in Hamburg that is the twin of "Onkel Poh's Carnegie Hall"! In May 1981, when this album was recorded, Count Basie was about to turn 77 years old. Already ill and often confined to a wheelchair, he passed away three years later, in April 1984, just before his 80th birthday. The "All Stars," led by concertmaster alto saxophonist Marshall Royal, had been formed before his death, which in itself was first of all unusual. The musicians who performed that night have been inheriting and influencing the Basie Effect, an important part of swing and big band history, for years, and some, like Royal, for decades.Harry Eddison, a.k.a. "Sweets," a trumpeter of the Old Basie era, Buddy Tate, Billy Mitchell, and others will of course participate.
