Common name: Star Magnolia
Description: This enchanting deciduous magnolia is one of the most reliable and floriferous spring-flowering shrubs for British gardens. From late winter to early spring, the bare branches become smothered in masses of star-shaped white flowers that open from silky pink-tinged buds. Each flower features 12-18 narrow, strap-like petals radiating outwards, creating a delicate star formation measuring 8-10cm across. The flowers are beautifully fragrant with a sweet, subtle scent that perfumes the surrounding air. Star magnolia is particularly valued for flowering whilst still young and small, unlike many magnolias which take years to mature. The compact, bushy habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens where larger magnolias would be impractical. After flowering, the neat oval leaves emerge, remaining attractive through summer before turning yellow in autumn. This magnolia is more tolerant of exposed positions than many species and flowers reliably year after year, creating a spectacular early spring display.
