Latin Name: Clematis virginiana
Description: Commonly known as Virgin's Bower, this large, climbing perennial produces masses of delicate, sweetly scented, star shaped blooms with central protruding wispy white and yellow stamens, appearing to 'burst' from the small, dainty buds. A prolific bloomer, the blossoms of this plant completely hide the trifoliate, bright green foliage and bright crimson red stems in the late summer, blooming into the fall. This plant climbs by its petioles, twisting around branches, trellises and other supports. Thrives in moderately moist to wet, well-draining soils. The leaves of this species are considered toxic to humans. Prune back hard in late winter-early spring.
