This map of the Hawaiian Islands uniquely features both topographic (elevation) and bathymetric (underwater) elevation layers, each representing 2000ft. This creates a dramatic effect that highlights the fact that the Hawaiian islands are really just the tops of massive underwater volcanoes. In fact, Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s highest point, is actually the tallest mountain in the world if measured from the ocean floor around it.
The islands themselves are marked with major features and a water-based green dye to contrast with the blue depth gradient of the ocean layers. This map also features markings for intermediate elevation contours in the underwater layers.
