V, the fifth album by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, a psychedelic rock band led by Ruban Neilson, is released. The album features 14 sun-drenched songs inspired by West Coast AOR, yacht rock, weird pop, and Hawaii's Hapa Haole music. Produced between Palm Springs, CA and Hilo, HI, V is the first double album by Unknown Mortal, the band of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Ruban Nielson, who is half Hawaiian and half New Zealand. Written solo or with his brother Kody, the 14 sunny songs draw from West Coast AOR, yacht rock, weird pop, and Hawaiian hapa haole music. Early in Pandemic, Ruban reunited with Kody at this wedding in Hawaii.With the help of their father Chris Nielson (sax/flute) and longtime Unknown Mortal Orchestra member Jake Portrait, they put together everything they had in mind. The result is V, which will be released on March 17, 2023 on Jagjaguwar. When talking about records that had moved him in the past, Ruban began to think about the AM radio rock of the 70s and the pop songs of the 80s that had been lurking on the edges of his subconscious. He wanted to write his own versions of those records, which led to two up-tempo singles, "Weekend Run" and "That Life," released in 2021. In Hawaii, there is a music called hapa haole. It can be heard in "I Killed Captain Cook," a song from "V" that is expressed in Unknown Mortal Orchestra's signature style through a humid, guitar-driven atmosphere.Influenced by Hawaiian music since the band's first album, Ruban found his place in that tradition.
